Super Micro Computer (SMCI) announced on September 23, 2026 that it has begun shipping NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 rack systems — NVIDIA’s next-generation AI platform following Blackwell. The first shipments mark the start of Supermicro converting its record order backlog into delivered AI infrastructure.
What happened
Per Supermicro’s company newsroom and press release, each NVL72 rack combines the company’s DCBBS (Data Center Building Block Solutions) blueprint with a complete DLC-2 direct liquid-cooling stack — from cold plates all the way to cooling towers — purpose-built for high-density AI clusters.
The headline specs, per rack:
- 72 NVIDIA Rubin GPUs paired with 36 NVIDIA Vera CPUs in a single liquid-cooled system
- 216 terabytes per second of scale-up bandwidth
- 20.7 terabytes of HBM4 memory
- Up to 54 terabytes of LPDDR5X memory
Why it matters
The context is what makes this a market story. SMCI reported record Q4 net sales of $11.1 billion and a backlog exceeding $60 billion heading into fiscal 2027, guiding to full-year sales of $65–72 billion and Q1 fiscal 2027 net sales of $14.5–15.5 billion. Every Vera Rubin rack shipped turns backlog into revenue — this is the execution phase of that guide.
The timing also signals where the industry’s capex is heading: TSMC capacity is already being redirected toward Vera Rubin. And Supermicro’s full-stack DLC-2 cooling is a genuine differentiator, since high-density AI racks live or die on thermal management.
What to watch
Watch for customer announcements and follow-on shipments through the quarter. Micron’s September 30 earnings will give a fresh read on AI memory demand, and investors will be watching whether SMCI’s Q1 deliveries track its $14.5–15.5 billion net sales guidance range.
