The Trump administration has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit in Miami this December — a move confirmed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday at the United Nations.

    What happened
Rubio told reporters in New York that the U.S. has extended an invitation for Putin to attend the Group of 20 leaders meeting at the Trump National Doral Miami resort in December. “We think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president, but with other world leaders,” Rubio said, adding that the administration hopes Putin accepts. The Kremlin has not accepted yet — spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was “premature” to discuss attendance and that no decision has been made. If Putin attends, it would be his first in-person G20 appearance since 2019 and his first visit to the United States since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he would travel to Florida to meet Putin separately.

    Why it matters
The invitation is the most visible sign yet of a diplomatic thaw channel running alongside the fighting. The Wall Street Journal reports the move could put Putin shoulder-to-shoulder with European, Asian and North American leaders for the first time since 2022 — a step that is already drawing criticism from Europeans and some Republicans who see it as normalizing his conduct. It comes amid a renewed diplomatic push: U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Putin in Moscow this month, and Rubio said Russia and Ukraine have both expressed interest in a limited ceasefire on energy-infrastructure targets.

    What to watch
The Kremlin’s final decision; whether Zelensky follows through on a Florida meeting; and any movement on the energy-infrastructure ceasefire idea. Energy traders should also keep one eye on this: any genuine de-escalation signal would hit oil prices, which are still trading with a war premium from the Iran crisis.
