What happened
TSMC’s next-generation 2-nanometer chips are selling out before the fabs are even finished. According to a report from Taiwanese outlet EDN, monthly 2nm wafer capacity could reach 120,000 wafers by the end of 2026 — well above earlier industry estimates of 90,000 to 100,000. Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm and MediaTek have all increased their 2nm orders by 10% to 20%, and TSMC is bringing five new 2nm fabs online this year across Hsinchu and Kaohsiung.
Key figures:
- 2nm capacity: about 120,000 wafers per month by end-2026, versus earlier estimates of 90,000-100,000
- Order increases of 10-20% from Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm and MediaTek
- High-performance computing: 66% of TSMC’s Q2 2026 revenue, up from 60% a year ago
Why it matters
This is hard evidence that the AI semiconductor cycle still has legs — customers don’t raise leading-edge orders 20% unless end demand is real. It also reinforces TSMC’s pricing power: analysts already expect the company to raise wafer prices 3-6% starting in 2027. The read-through is broad, spanning Nvidia’s AI chip ramp, AMD’s data-center push, and Apple’s next-generation processors, all of which depend on this node.
What to watch
Whether TSMC confirms the expanded 2nm ramp on its next earnings call, and how much of the 2026 capacity is already committed under long-term agreements. TSM shares trade with a consensus mean price target implying more than 20% upside — but valuation leaves little room for disappointment if the ramp slips.
Is TSMC the safest way to play the AI trade, or do you prefer the chip designers themselves?
