What happened
Ukraine has retaken more ground in the most contested stretch of the eastern front. On Monday, Brigadier-General Andrii Biletskyi, who commands operations in northern Donetsk, said the Third Army Corps recaptured 51 square kilometers (20 square miles) of territory, Reuters reported. The gains are part of an offensive the Ukrainian military has named Operation “Vivaldi.”
The key figures from the announcement:
– 176 sq km retaken in total since the operation began
– Three villages freed, with Ukrainian control restored over two more
– ~20% of Donetsk still held by Ukraine; Russia demands the entire region — its central condition at stalled peace talks
– Russian frontline advances have slowed this year, even as its forces press on eastern cities from the southThe Institute for the Study of War, a Washington think tank, said the operation achieved the “operationally-significant” goal of disrupting Moscow’s effort to encircle Ukraine’s eastern “fortress belt” of cities. The gains add to an earlier 2026 push in the southeast, where Kyiv said it clawed back more than 700 sq km in a months-long counterattack.
Why it matters
This is the first hard evidence in weeks that Ukraine is doing more than holding the line in Donetsk — it is reversing Russian pressure around the most heavily fortified cities in the east. Moscow’s central operational goal has been a wide encirclement of that fortress belt; breaking that pressure changes the arithmetic of any future negotiation, because taking all of Donetsk by force now looks considerably harder.
The backdrop remains brutal. A guided bomb hit a Kharkiv apartment building early Monday, injuring 22 people including children, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Ukraine is “paying the price” for its own strikes on Russia — a signal that Moscow’s aerial campaign will continue even as its ground advance stalls.
What to watch
Watch whether these gains hold — Russian counterattacks on retaken villages typically follow within days. Also watch Washington: the US has said it wants negotiations restarted, and Kyiv’s momentum strengthens its bargaining position. For markets, the read-through is energy: any escalation that threatens Black Sea shipping or refineries can feed back into oil prices fast.

Do you think Ukraine’s battlefield gains change how this war ends — or does Russia simply escalate somewhere else?
