What happened
The Wall Street Journal reported Friday night, citing U.S. officials, that President Trump has told aides he expects to resume bombing Iran after the November midterm elections. The report adds a hard deadline to the seven-month Iran conflict just as a parallel diplomatic track appeared to be moving.
Here is the sequence of events over the weekend: Trump rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in a seven-day ceasefire, calling it “unacceptable” on Saturday. Iran’s plan — delivered during the UN General Assembly week — would have reopened the waterway and resumed nuclear talks if the U.S. lifted its naval blockade, released frozen Iranian assets, and waived oil sanctions. Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran is still awaiting a “definitive” response via mediators. On Sunday, Trump told Axios he expects more talks with Iran this week, saying Iran “overplayed their hand.”
Key figures:
- Brent crude is trading above $100 per barrel, with some reports putting it near $106-109 after the tanker attacks
- U.S. stock futures slipped in Sunday overnight trading: Dow -0.3%, S&P 500 -0.33%, Nasdaq-100 -0.6%
- The 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.23% intraday Friday, its highest since 2007, closing the week at 5.18%
- Last week: S&P 500 +1.2%, Nasdaq +2.1%, Dow +0.3% — but breadth was narrow, with the equal-weight S&P 500 down 0.6%
Why it matters
The “after the midterms” framing resolves the central contradiction that has confused markets all week: Trump is simultaneously rejecting deals, promising more talks, and reportedly planning to bomb. If the bombing campaign is on hold until November, oil’s recent decline on deal hopes may reverse quickly — WTI fell 3.8% last week to $92.41 a barrel on exactly those hopes. Energy prices feed directly into the Fed’s inflation math, and the 10-year yield already breached 5.2% on supply concerns.

What to watch
Indirect U.S.-Iran talks could happen as soon as Monday — watch for any formal reply from mediators. On the data side, August PCE inflation drops Wednesday (economists expect 3.7% headline, 3.3% core) and the September jobs report follows Friday (+100,000 payrolls expected, 4.1% unemployment). A hot PCE print plus escalating Iran risk would put another Fed hike firmly on the table at the October 27-28 meeting. And behind it all: the midterm calendar is now the real clock on this conflict.

Not financial advice.Could another round of U.S. strikes push Brent back above $110, or is the market right to discount the threat until after November?
