What happened
Asia’s equity capital markets are on track to test their 2021 record, Reuters reported, as the AI boom feeds a deal pipeline that shows little sign of slowing.
- High-tech firms raised $125.8 billion — 38% of total proceeds — over three times the amount a year earlier, per LSEG data.
- South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix raised $26.5 billion in a Nasdaq share sale, while China’s Zhongji Innolight raised $7.8 billion in Hong Kong.
Bankers say the window is open but investors are getting “more selective.” Citi’s Kenneth Chow sees signs of caution after the heavy supply, while UBS’s Aaron Oh notes the market remains willing to fund growth for companies showing real AI earnings — not just an AI narrative.
Why it matters
The capital-raising wave is the other side of the AI capex story: demand for funding is enormous, and — so far — so is the appetite to provide it. That liquidity underpins the chip, data-center, and networking buildout.
The risk is supply. Heavy new-paper issuance can dilute existing holders and pressure valuations if investors start demanding better terms — which Chow says is already happening versus two or three months ago.
What to watch
- Q4 deal pricing — whether discounts widen as supply grows.
- Use of proceeds — AI capex vs. balance-sheet repair tells you how confident issuers feel.
- The 2027 pipeline — watch whether “selective” turns into a shut window.

Discussion question for readers: Is this flood of AI equity the fuel the rally runs on — or the supply overhang that eventually cools it?
