Citizens Financial (CFG) reported third-quarter 2026 EPS of $1.41, up 34% year over year and about 1.5% above the $1.39 consensus. Revenue rose 9.6% to $2.32 billion — a record quarter — but missed the $2.33 billion estimate, and shares fell after the report.
- EPS: $1.41 vs $1.39 est (+1.5% beat, +34% YoY)
- Revenue: $2.32B vs $2.33B est (record, +9.6% YoY, slight miss)
- NII: $1.68B (+12.6% YoY, in line); NIM 3.19% (+19bps)
- ROTCE: 15.1% (from 13.9% in Q2); net income $636M (+29%)
- Dividend raised 13%; buyback authorization expanded
Under the hood the quarter was strong. Pre-provision profit rose 18.6% year over year to $929 million on 13% net interest income growth and a 19-basis-point margin expansion to 3.19%. Positive operating leverage hit 5.3% year over year.
The market focused on the other side of the ledger: tangible book value per share of $35.78, roughly 7% below estimates and down from last quarter, plus an efficiency ratio of 60% that missed by about 38 basis points. Fee income also softened — declining capital markets fees drove the revenue shortfall.
Management signaled confidence with a 13% dividend increase and a bigger buyback authorization, and projected further earnings momentum in Q4. But the verdict is clear: in this market, a record quarter isn’t enough if any line disappoints. Watch whether capital markets income rebounds in Q4.
