Travelers (TRV) reported third-quarter 2026 core earnings of $9.18 per share, up 13% year over year and roughly 30% above the $7.07 consensus estimate. Revenue came in at $12.45 billion, essentially flat year over year and in line with expectations.

    • Core EPS: $9.18 vs $7.07 consensus (+29.8% surprise); GAAP EPS $9.04 (+10% YoY)
    • Revenue: $12.45B (flat YoY, in line); net written premiums $11.48B
    • Combined ratio: 86.8% (50bps better YoY); catastrophe losses $538M vs $695M estimated
    • Core income: $1.95B (+4.3%); net income $1.92B (+1.5%)
    • Shareholder returns: $1.77B ($1.51B buybacks + $1.25/share dividend)

The headline beat came from underwriting, not pricing. Favorable prior-year reserve development jumped to $234 million from $22 million a year ago, and catastrophe losses of $538 million came in well under the $695 million estimate, driven by severe wind and hailstorms that proved milder than feared.

Net investment income hit a record, up mid-single digits, as higher yields and reinvestment compounded. By segment, Business Insurance net written premiums rose 3% to $5.87 billion, Bond & Specialty surged 12% to $1.21 billion, while Personal Insurance fell 7% to $4.40 billion — the only soft spot.

The underlying combined ratio of 84.1% deteriorated 20 basis points, so the beat is not pure underwriting improvement; reserve releases did heavy lifting. Still, a core return on equity of 22.1% and $1.77 billion returned to shareholders make this one of the cleanest prints of earnings season. Watch whether reserve development holds into Q4, and whether Personal Insurance stabilizes.
