M&T Bank (MTB) reported third-quarter 2026 diluted net operating earnings of $5.08 per share, beating the $4.93 consensus by $0.15. Revenue of about $2.54 billion edged past the $2.53 billion estimate. Net income was $775 million, down from $818 million in the second quarter.

    • Diluted EPS: $5.04 GAAP / $5.08 operating vs $4.93 consensus
    • Revenue: ~$2.54B vs $2.53B est (+~2% YoY)
    • NIM: 3.65% (narrowed 5bps QoQ); provision for credit losses $135M (from $120M)
    • Avg loans: $143.3B; avg deposits: $166.8B; CET1: 10.16%
    • Buybacks: 1.3M shares for $323M; shares +1.5% premarket

The beat was built on the loan book. Average loans grew $2.6 billion quarter over quarter to $143.3 billion, led by commercial real estate and consumer loans, and commercial and industrial loans rose $4.2 billion year over year.

The concern is margin. Net interest margin narrowed five basis points to 3.65% even as loans grew — deposit costs are still catching up — while the provision for credit losses rose to $135 million and the efficiency ratio ticked up to 54.4% from 53.6% a year ago.

Capital return stayed aggressive: $323 million in buybacks during the quarter on top of $465 million last quarter, with CET1 at 10.16% leaving room to continue. Watch whether loan growth can outrun margin compression in Q4, and whether credit provisions keep rising.
