Bitcoin fell back under $84,000 on September 24, 2026, as Treasury yields climbed to their highest level since 2007. Bitcoin dropped more than 2% to about $83,900, touching an intraday low near $83,654.39, according to CoinDesk. The pressure came from a rebound in oil prices, the strongest US business survey in five years, and a poorly received five-year Treasury note sale — a mix that tightened financial conditions and punished risk assets across the board.

The sell-off was broad. Dogecoin led the decline with a roughly 7–8% drop, while Zcash, XRP and Hyperliquid each lost 5–6%. Ethereum retreated to around $2,600. Crypto-linked equities slid too: Strategy Inc. (MSTR) closed down 3.07% and Bitmine Immersion (BMNR) down 4.52%. Leverage unwound hard — more than $540 million was liquidated from the crypto market in 24 hours, with long positions taking the heaviest losses, per Coinglass data. Bitcoin open interest fell 6.63% and the BTC long/short ratio dipped below 1.

Why it matters: when yields reach 19-year highs, cash and bonds become genuine competitors to speculative assets again, and crypto feels the rotation first. The sub-1 long/short ratio and the $540 million liquidation wave show positioning had grown complacent — this was a leverage reset as much as a price move. Notably, an analyst cited by Benzinga still sees a $100,000 Bitcoin target despite the dip, a reminder that the longer-term bull thesis has not cracked even as short-term momentum has.

What to watch: the next round of Treasury auctions and any shift in Fed rate-hike odds will set the tone. If yields keep climbing, $80,000 becomes the line in the sand for Bitcoin. Also watch whether the liquidation cascade has run its course — open interest is still normalizing — and whether Ethereum holds $2,600 or follows altcoins lower.

    Not financial advice.

Is this dip a buying opportunity on the way to $100K, or do rising yields break the crypto bid for good?
