EU Delays Tesla FSD Vote to December as Speed-Limit Concerns Grow

The European Union’s vote on Tesla’s supervised self-driving (FSD) system has been pushed back, with December now the earliest apparent opportunity for approval. Reuters reported Friday that the next meeting of the Technical Committee – Motor Vehicles (TCMV) after October falls in December, delaying a decision Tesla has called key to reviving its European sales.

    What happened

An EU-wide rollout of Tesla’s FSD requires a “qualified majority”: at least 15 of the EU’s 27 member states, representing 65% of the bloc’s population. That bar now looks harder to clear on the original timeline. Several EU countries, including Sweden, have raised concerns about FSD exceeding speed limits, while countries that already approved the system argue drivers remain responsible for complying with traffic laws. The same committee approved Ford’s BlueCruise driver-assistance system in March 2024, with Germany as its sponsor — a precedent that shows the process can move, but not always on Tesla’s schedule.

    Why it matters

Tesla has explicitly tied FSD approval to boosting sales in Europe, where it is trying to regain market share amid intensifying competition from Chinese EV makers. Every month of delay is a month in which Tesla cannot market one of its most distinctive software features to European buyers, while rivals close the technology gap. The speed-limit concerns also cut to the heart of the regulatory debate: supervisors like Sweden want evidence the system respects local traffic law, and a single high-profile incident during the approval process could harden opposition further.

    What to watch

All eyes are on the December TCMV meeting and the quiet vote-counting beforehand — Tesla needs 15 states and 65% of the EU population, so watch which capitals the company and its supporters lobby in the coming weeks. Also watch how Tesla responds technically: a software update demonstrably addressing speed-limit compliance could defuse the main objection. Longer term, the decision will set a precedent for how quickly advanced driver-assistance systems can roll out across the bloc, with implications well beyond Tesla.

Do you think EU regulators will clear Tesla’s FSD in December — or will speed-limit concerns push approval into 2027?

    Not financial advice.
