Bitcoin is the only “universal bet” in crypto for institutions, according to Bitwise’s September 2026 institutional adoption report — while Ethereum and Solana are still treated as venture-stage bets that must prove themselves.

What happened. Bitwise interviewed 15 major institutions and found that every single one that owns crypto holds Bitcoin. For nearly every institution, BTC was the first, largest, and longest-held digital asset — typically framed as an emerging store of value or a hedge against currency debasement. Several institutions pair it directly with gold, and one described its long-term thesis bluntly: “We could be having this conversation in 10 years and we’re telling you we gave up on gold and it’s all bitcoin now.” Ethereum and Solana get very different treatment: institutions holding them describe the positions as venture-stage technology bets with explicit performance requirements and shorter time horizons. One institution that has held crypto for a decade put it plainly: “Something has to work. At some point, if this stuff doesn’t work, we’ll be out.” The report also found that not one of the 15 institutions cut its allocation during crypto’s roughly 50% crash between October 2025 and April 2026 — and several bought more. Almost every institution now uses spot crypto ETFs or plans to, citing lower costs, simpler compliance, and easier portfolio reporting.

Why it matters. The findings suggest institutional crypto demand is stickier — and far more Bitcoin-concentrated — than ETF flow headlines imply. Bitwise argues institutions are unlikely to drive the next major selloff, pointing instead to retail investors, leveraged traders, and forced liquidations as the more likely sources of selling pressure during drawdowns. There is also an important caveat for anyone reading 13F filings: some institutions deliberately avoid ETFs to sidestep disclosure requirements, so reported ETF ownership should be treated as a floor, not the complete picture of institutional exposure. Typical allocations remain modest but meaningful: endowments and foundations run 0.5%–2% (up to 10%), sovereign wealth funds 1%–1.5%, public pensions 1.5%–4.5%, and family offices up to 13% with a target around 5%.

What to watch. Institutions’ exit triggers are thesis-based, not price-based: ETH or SOL failing to show real value accrual, a major regulatory reversal, a serious technical failure, the collapse of a major industry participant, or an industry-wide credibility crisis. None cited price declines as a reason to exit. Bitwise flags regulatory clarity and peer adoption as the two biggest bullish catalysts — each credible institutional allocation makes the next one easier to justify. On the risk side, a failure of Ethereum and Solana to convert real-world usage into token value could narrow institutional portfolios back toward Bitcoin alone.

Which side of the divide are you on — is Bitcoin the only crypto asset that deserves an institutional allocation, or will Ethereum and Solana eventually prove themselves? What would “proof” look like to you? Share your take below.
