Ethereum has overtaken Bitcoin in open interest on Hyperliquid for the first time — ETH around $3.02 billion versus BTC around $2.80 billion, per CryptoBriefing via TradingView. The flip stands out because Bitcoin has dominated crypto derivatives for most of the industry’s history, and because it happened on a venue now sitting near the center of the global perp market.
What happened
Traders on Hyperliquid, a decentralized perpetual futures exchange, are now carrying more open ETH positions than BTC ones. The platform itself hit a record of roughly $18 billion in total open interest as of late September 2026. Throughout 2026, ETH and BTC have seesawed for the top open-interest slot on Hyperliquid — so this is less a one-off print than the latest turn in an ongoing rotation.
Hyperliquid is estimated to hold between 8.7% and 10.9% of global perpetual futures open interest, which is why a positioning flip there is more than a rounding error. The exchange launched around 2023, runs an on-chain central limit order book rather than an AMM, and offers up to 50x leverage. Its October 2025 HIP-3 framework opened tokenized traditional-asset markets, widening the venue’s reach beyond pure crypto perps.
- $3.02B — ETH open interest vs ~$2.80B BTC on Hyperliquid
- ~$18B — record total open interest on the platform as of late September 2026
- 8.7%–10.9% — Hyperliquid’s estimated share of global perpetual futures open interest
- 50x — maximum leverage offered on the exchange’s on-chain order book
Why it matters
Open interest is a headcount of live bets, not trading volume — so the ETH lead signals traders are leaning harder into ETH derivatives exposure right now. Rotations like this often precede bigger moves: derivatives positioning is where leverage, hedging and speculative conviction show up first. With HIP-3 expanding the venue into tokenized traditional assets, Hyperliquid’s OI mix is becoming a broader sentiment gauge worth tracking.
What to watch
Watch whether ETH holds the top open-interest spot into October or hands it straight back to BTC — a sustained lead would confirm genuine rotation in trader positioning. Also watch the platform’s record $18 billion in total open interest: if it keeps climbing alongside ETH’s lead, that strengthens the case that speculative risk appetite is concentrating in ETH.
