Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a Sunday essay mapping Ethereum’s path to 2030 — and the Glamsterdam upgrade’s public testnet launches on Sepolia on October 6, 2026.
What happened
In an essay titled “The cryptographic world computer,” Buterin argued Ethereum is “really not just a blockchain anymore,” evolving into a hybrid architecture that merges blockchain design with modern cryptography (CoinDesk, Sept 27).
- The Hegota upgrade, planned for next year (execution “Bogotá” + consensus “Heze” naming), is likely Ethereum’s last “normal” fork — before recursive STARKs, formal verification, and quantum safety take center stage.
- 2030 targets: 4–8 second slot times and 8–32 second finality, plus stronger privacy for payments, balances, and wallet activity.
- Glamsterdam’s public testnet launches on Sepolia on October 6, 2026, bringing proposer-builder separation and Block-Level Access Lists for more efficient block processing; mainnet is targeted for Q4 2026. Holders need take no action.
- Buterin also flagged that an Ethereum node can now sync in under half a day, with disk use below half a terabyte on aggressive settings — progress from EIP-4444 and improved snap sync.
- ETH traded around $2,708–2,713 on Sunday.
Why it matters
Roadmap discipline is part of ETH’s investment case. Faster finality and proposer-builder separation attack the exact UX and scalability critiques leveled against Ethereum by competing L1s — and a credible path to quantum safety is something institutional allocators increasingly price in. Near term, Glamsterdam’s Q4 mainnet target is a real technical catalyst, and it lands on a favorable regulatory backdrop: SEC staff have clarified staking receipts aren’t securities under narrow conditions, while spot Ethereum ETFs pulled in roughly $746M over five consecutive inflow days through September 24. A cleaner, faster chain plus growing institutional plumbing is the constructive setup.
What to watch
Watch the Sepolia launch on October 6, then testnet results and any firming of the Q4 mainnet date. Beyond that: dev commentary on Hegota’s scope, whether ETF inflows keep running, and how validator economics evolve as finality upgrades roll out. Any delay to the mainnet timeline would be the obvious bearish signal.

Does Buterin’s 2030 vision make you more constructive on ETH — or do you need to see the Glamsterdam mainnet ship first?
