Beginner Q: How do options expiration days affect the market?

Short answer starter: options have an expiration date, after which the contract no longer exists. Standard monthly equity options expire on the third Friday of the month. That’s tomorrow, Oct 16. Weekly and daily contracts now add expirations almost every trading day.

Why expiration days can move prices:

    • Hedge unwinds: market makers hedge the options they’ve sold with stock. As contracts expire, those hedges come off, which can add buying or selling pressure.
    • “Pinning”: stocks with huge open interest at one strike sometimes drift toward that strike into the close.
    • Volume spikes and volatility near the close, especially on quarterly “triple witching” months (Mar/Jun/Sep/Dec).

Most of the time the effect is short-lived noise, not a trend change. Not financial advice.
