What happened
Iran’s armed forces said Sunday they are fully prepared for any renewed U.S. attack, after President Donald Trump publicly rejected Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
- Army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia, quoted by Iranian state media on Sunday, said the armed forces were “fully prepared for confrontation” and warned Washington would suffer greater damage if it launched another attack.
- Separately, Army Commander-in-Chief Amir Hatami said the war was at a “critical and decisive stage,” adding: “If Iran cannot trade, if Iran cannot live, no one will be able to trade or live.”
- The statement follows Trump’s rejection on Saturday of Iran’s seven-day plan to reopen the strait. That proposal called for a ceasefire on all fronts in the Middle East, partial release of frozen assets, and lifting sanctions on Iranian oil exports in exchange for reopening the waterway within seven days.
Why it matters
This is the first formal armed-forces-level readiness declaration since the rejection, shifting the standoff from diplomacy back toward military signaling. It matters to investors because energy is directly in the crosshairs: about a fifth of the world’s gas and oil supply flows through the strait, which has been effectively closed since the war began in February.
- Brent crude closed Friday at $104.45 a barrel, holding above $100 on the war risk premium.
- The 10-year Treasury yield ended the week at 5.16%, after touching its highest level since 2007 on Friday.
- Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi says Tehran is still “waiting for the mediators” (Qatar and Pakistan) to convey Washington’s definitive position, so diplomacy isn’t fully dead — but the army’s tone suggests Tehran is preparing for the alternative.
- The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Trump has told aides he expects to resume bombing Iran after the November midterm elections.
What to watch
- Whether mediators deliver a “definitive” U.S. response this week. Araqchi says Iran’s conditions are “clear” and unchanged: lift the U.S. naval blockade, waive oil sanctions, release frozen assets.
- Qatar’s push to convene a new round of talks in Oman as early as next week, focused on restoring shipping through the strait.
- Brent and WTI price action at the Sunday open, and whether Houthi attacks on Saudi targets escalate further. On Saturday, Saudi-backed coalition forces said air defenses intercepted two drones toward Riyadh and a ballistic missile near Khamis Mushait.
