    What happened

Nanexa (NANEXA.ST) shares jumped about 122% in early Friday trading — their highest level in more than five years — after the Swedish drug-delivery company announced a global licensing deal with Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) worth up to about €1.17 billion ($1.33 billion). The agreement, disclosed after markets closed on Thursday, September 24, covers long-acting injectable drugs for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other cardiometabolic diseases.

Under the deal, Novo gets exclusive rights to use Nanexa’s PharmaShell technology — an ultra-thin coating on drug particles that controls their release over time — in up to five development programs. The goal is formulations that need to be administered only monthly or quarterly, sharply cutting injection frequency for chronic treatments. The package includes an upfront payment plus development and regulatory milestones totaling €615 million, with the rest coming from sales milestones. Nanexa will also receive a low single-digit percentage royalty on global sales of resulting products, while Novo will lead global development and commercialization.

    Why it matters

Long-acting dosing is emerging as a key differentiator in the crowded obesity and GLP-1 race, where once-weekly injections are the norm today. Notably, Novo is paying a premium here for delivery technology rather than a new molecule — a sign of how much Big Pharma now values platform technologies that can extend and defend existing franchises. The deal size also dwarfs Nanexa’s previous scale, re-rating the company overnight and validating years of work behind PharmaShell.

    What to watch

Next catalysts: progress of the first development programs, milestone payments being triggered, the regulatory path for long-acting injectable formulations, and readouts from Novo’s broader obesity pipeline that could reshape the competitive landscape.
