    What happened

Russian forces staged intensive strikes across Ukraine on Sunday, September 27, with daylight hits on three cities. In the northern city of Sumy, three glide bombs struck near a family support centre, killing two people, according to regional governor Oleh Hryhorov. In Kharkiv, a drone struck a car, killing the driver, according to prosecutors.

In Kyiv, mayor Vitali Klitschko said a drone hit a high-rise apartment building in an eastern suburb, triggering a fire that wounded one person; drones also hit near a kindergarten and a playground in two districts. Russia’s defence ministry separately said overnight strikes hit logistics centres, port and transport infrastructure in the Kyiv and Odesa regions, two drone storages in Mykolaiv, a naval base headquarters, and a cargo ship carrying military and dual-use goods to Odesa. Ukraine’s digital ministry says about 100,000 households in Kyiv and surrounding areas remain offline after a week of data-centre strikes (see related reading below).

    • Sumy: 3 glide bombs near a family support centre; 2 killed
    • Kharkiv: 1 driver killed in a drone strike on a car
    • Kyiv: apartment-block strike wounded 1; impacts near a kindergarten and a playground
    • ~100,000 Kyiv-area households offline after data-centre strikes

    Why it matters

The pattern matters more than any single strike: Russian attacks now run near-continuously through the day instead of arriving only at night, widening civilian risk and keeping markets from settling. Ukraine has simultaneously struck Russian oil refineries, and this back-and-forth on energy infrastructure keeps crude and shipping-insurance nerves exposed. Brent is already above $100 on the Strait of Hormuz blockade, and a widening infrastructure war keeps the geopolitical risk premium embedded rather than fading.

    What to watch

    • Whether strikes on Sumy expand into the announced Russian “buffer zone” push.
    • Ukrainian retaliatory strikes on Russian refineries and ports.
    • Diplomacy: Russia’s top diplomat reportedly brushed off German calls for de-escalation on Saturday in what was reportedly the first face-to-face meeting with his German counterpart since the 2022 invasion (per AP via reflector.com); watch Zelenskiy’s call for China and India to pressure Moscow.
