What happened
Tesla heads into its third-quarter delivery print, expected Friday, October 2, with an unusual bright spot in its order book. The company’s configurator now shows that anyone ordering the six-seat Model Y L today would wait until January–February 2027 for delivery — a four- to five-month backlog that signals demand is outpacing supply for the new family SUV.
The stretched Model Y first went on sale in China in August 2025 as a long-wheelbase, six-seat variant. Tesla opened U.S. and Puerto Rico orders on July 2, 2026 for a limited Premium AWD Launch Series built at Gigafactory Texas, priced at $61,990. The package bundles a year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), Supercharging, and Premium Connectivity, plus free paint, interior, and wheel choices. Launch-day buyers began taking delivery this month, while July and August orders have been pushed into October and November.
This comes on a difficult Monday for the stock: shares fell about 3–4% to roughly $357–360 after JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs cut their Q3 delivery forecasts, citing weaker-than-expected U.S. and China sales.
Why it matters
Key figures:
– January–February 2027 — wait time for a new Model Y L order placed today
– $61,990 — U.S. starting price of the Model Y L Launch Series
– Friday, October 2 — Tesla’s Q3 delivery numbers are expectedAnalysts are bracing for a soft headline number, but the Model Y L backlog tells a more nuanced story. A multi-month wait list on a new higher-priced trim is exactly what Tesla needs right now: it shifts the demand mix toward fatter-margin vehicles even if total unit volume disappoints. For investors, the Model Y L is the strongest real-time demand signal Tesla has produced in months.
What to watch
Friday’s delivery print is the immediate catalyst — watch whether management breaks out Model Y L commentary alongside it. Then comes September 30, Tesla’s deadline to answer NHTSA’s questions about Cybercab certification, and the rescheduled Roadster unveiling on October 15. If delivery numbers miss but the Model Y L order bank keeps growing, the market may look through the headline.
