President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson will meet with technology executives at the White House on Tuesday, September 29, to discuss artificial intelligence policy, according to a source familiar with the planning. Axios first reported the meeting, Reuters confirmed the September 29 date on September 24, and the Washington Examiner confirmed via a White House official that the session will take place. No attendee list or agenda has been made public.

The meeting lands at a pivotal moment in the AI policy debate. Tech leaders including Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg, Jensen Huang, and Sundar Pichai attended Thursday’s White House state dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping. Meanwhile the AI safety debate has intensified: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for an international slowdown on frontier AI development, while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has pushed back, arguing companies should move quickly but not ship products they cannot control. Earlier in the week, Trump told the UN General Assembly he rejects “any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control” AI. Johnson has said the House will not pursue “stupid knee-jerk reaction prescriptions” and wants to hear from the industry first.

Why it matters: the gathering could set the tone for U.S. AI regulation ahead of the November midterm elections. What emerges — binding rules, voluntary industry commitments, or a deliberately hands-off stance — will shape compliance costs, liability exposure, and competitive positioning for the biggest names in tech, and by extension the AI trade that has carried equity markets this year.

What to watch: the attendee list and any statements coming out of the September 29 session; Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent already said this week that AI developers should take responsibility for their systems rather than expect a federal liability shield. Also watch for any congressional follow-through from Speaker Johnson after the meeting.
