UnitedHealth delivered the cleanest beat-and-raise of Tuesday’s earnings rush. The health giant reported third-quarter adjusted EPS of $4.69, roughly 12% above the ~$4.19 consensus, on revenue of $112.69 billion — and raised its full-year 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to at least $20.50, up from the prior $19.50–$20.00 range.

    Key figures (Q3 2026):

    • Adjusted EPS: $4.69 vs ~$4.19 consensus (+12%); GAAP EPS $4.56
    • Revenue: $112.69 billion (-0.4% YoY) vs ~$111.4B consensus
    • Medical care ratio: 88.4%, improved from 89.9% a year ago
    • UnitedHealthcare: $86.3B revenue, $2.8B operating earnings; Optum: $66.9B revenue, $3.7B earnings
    • FY2026 adjusted EPS guidance: at least $20.50 (raised from $19.50–$20.00)

The beat was driven by margin management, not top-line growth. The medical care ratio improved to 88.4% from 89.9% a year ago — better than the ~90% analysts expected — reflecting pricing discipline and medical-cost controls. Both UnitedHealthcare and Optum topped operating earnings estimates, and net income surged to $4.11 billion from $2.35 billion a year earlier. AI is showing up in the numbers: chart summaries now cover over 40% of employed clinicians, cutting chart-review time by a third.

Management tempered the celebration for next year, saying the lower end of the long-term 13%–16% earnings-growth target is a more reasonable 2027 starting point than current expectations, citing medical-cost and funding pressures. Shares rose about 3% premarket and ended roughly flat near $379 — the market digested the raise rather than chasing it.
