The 30-Year Tops 5.5% as Stocks Split

Wall Street closed mixed as the 30-year Treasury touched its highest since 2002, consumer confidence sank to a 12-year low, and a mortgage-credit shakeup sent Fair Isaac tumbling.

The close in one lineCapital got more expensive, the consumer got gloomier, and the market’s leadership narrowed to a handful of names.

A rates problem kept equities in check

The S&P 500 slipped 0.2%, the Dow fell 132 points, and the Russell 2000 dropped 0.4%, while the Nasdaq 100 managed a 0.2% gain. The 30-year Treasury yield closed at 5.595%—its highest since 2002—with the 10-year at 5.234%, near a 2007 high, as investors demanded a bigger term premium.

The consumer picture darkened. September consumer confidence came in at 81.9, the weakest reading since 2014 and well below the 89.0 consensus, while August JOLTS openings fell to 7,079K, a five-month low. Nearly seven in ten consumers (68.4%) now expect rates to move higher.

Fed voices pulled in both directions. New York Fed President Williams said one more hike this year could be appropriate but there is no rush after this month’s move, cooling October hike bets. Governor Barr countered that stronger growth momentum could raise the odds of further tightening.

    What the pros are saying

One more hike this year could be appropriate, but with this month’s move already in place there is no need to rush — a message that cooled bets on an October hike.

NY Fed President Williams, via SAVE

Stronger growth momentum could raise the odds of further tightening if inflation stays sticky.

    Fed Governor Barr, via SAVE

Strategists tied the bond selloff to three forces: persistent inflation, expanding government borrowing, and the surge in AI-infrastructure corporate debt competing for investor capital.
