The week ended with a rally. The Dow added 423 points, the S&P 500 closed within 0.2% of its record, and the Nasdaq posted its fourth straight weekly gain. Tech rebounded from Thursday’s OpenAI scare. Telecoms got crushed.

The theme of the day: rotation. Money moved out of yesterday’s AI panic and into everything the panic had missed.

    Market Close

    Index Close Change
    S&P 500 ~7,812 +0.6%
    Dow Jones ~51,655 +0.8%
    Nasdaq Composite ~27,357 +0.6%
    Russell 2000 2,806.98 +0.46%

For the week: S&P +1.2%, Dow +0.9%, Nasdaq +0.6%. Nine of eleven S&P sectors finished higher Friday. The equal-weight S&P snapped a seven-week losing streak — its longest since 2022.

    Yields, Dollar & Commodities

    Asset Level Move
    10-year Treasury 5.243% +1.1 bp
Brent crude $104.72 Eased on diesel deal
    WTI crude ~$90.70 -0.9%
    Gold futures ~$4,210/oz +1.0%
    Bitcoin ~$83,200 Steady
    VIX 15.02 -2.5%

The WSJ Dollar Index rose for a fourth straight week — its longest streak in over a year — as traders price more Fed hikes.

    The Telecom Rout

The day’s biggest story was SpaceX’s $8 billion spectrum deal. Investors decided Starlink Mobile is now a real threat to the wireless oligopoly.

    • T-Mobile (TMUS): -13.2%
    • Verizon (VZ): ~-10%
    • AT&T (T): -8.5%

They were the three biggest decliners in the S&P 500. On the other side: tower operators Crown Castle, SBA Communications, and American Tower surged 7–16% — if SpaceX builds a terrestrial network, someone has to rent it towers.

    Trump–Putin Diesel Deal

President Trump said Vladimir Putin agreed to release Russian diesel supplies to the U.S. and global markets. Treasury issued a license running through April 7, 2027. U.S. diesel prices sit near $6.28/gallon.

Oil eased but stayed elevated — Brent at $104.72 after reports of more strikes on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also said “productive” talks with Iran continue and the U.S. won’t strike before the midterms.

    Tech Rebounds, Humana Soars

The Magnificent Seven ETF (MAGS) rose 1%, clawing back Thursday’s losses after Bloomberg’s $70B OpenAI report soothed nerves. But the AI trade still has doubters: Nvidia-backed Firmus Grid scrapped its $5 billion Australian IPO — the country’s largest in nearly 30 years. Nvidia slipped 0.5%.

Humana (HUM) soared 11% to a record $433.77 after CMS restored a 4-star rating to a key Medicare contract. Delta (DAL) ended flat after its Thursday miss — the market had already priced the fuel pain.

    Consumers Are Gloomy

The University of Michigan’s preliminary October sentiment index fell to 46.3 — a five-month low, below the 47.6 forecast. Current conditions hit a record low of 44.7, and inflation expectations ticked up. With $4 gas and 7.4% mortgages, the gloom is understandable.

    What the Tape Says

    • Breadth improved. The equal-weight S&P broke its seven-week losing streak — the rally is finally broadening.
    • Thursday’s AI scare faded. OpenAI’s $70B counter-report did its job; semis stabilized.
    • But yields won’t quit. The 10-year at 5.24% keeps pressure on small caps and housing.
    • Energy is the swing vote. Every $10 in crude is a tax on consumers and a transfer to producers — the diesel deal is worth watching.

    What’s Next

    • Tuesday, Oct 13 — JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, J&J, UnitedHealth kick off Q3 earnings
    • Wednesday, Oct 14 — Bank of America, BlackRock; September CPI
    • Oct 27–28 — FOMC meeting
