The Fed Paused Its Tone. Oil Did the Talking.
Fed officials signaled they need more time before any further tightening, sending Treasury yields down from near-20-year highs — but a report of a third U.S. carrier strike group heading to the Middle East pushed crude past $92. Stocks still closed higher ahead of Friday’s jobs report.

The S&P 500 rose 0.19% to 7,666.45, the Nasdaq 100 added 0.31% to 30,501.56, the Dow edged up 0.04% to 50,926.56, and the Russell 2000 gained 0.35% to 2,806.63. Stocks climbed out of early weakness as Treasury yields retreated from near-20-year highs.
The dovish turn came from the Fed itself. Vice Chair Jefferson said more time may be needed before deciding on additional rate hikes, while Vice Chair for Supervision Bowman said the central bank should first watch how the September hike filters through the economy. Their remarks echoed New York Fed President John Williams’ comment Tuesday that there is “no urgency to hurry.” Goldman Sachs withdrew its October hike forecast, pushing it to December.
Oil provided the counterweight. The Wall Street Journal reported the Pentagon could deploy a third carrier strike group and up to 10,000 more troops to the Middle East, while China’s halt of fuel exports stoked supply fears. WTI settled at $92.91 and Brent rose more than $4. President Trump warned that “if Iran does not agree, it will no longer exist,” and Iran denied a Bloomberg report that it would allow nuclear inspections in exchange for sanctions relief.
01 · RATESFed’s “we need more time” signal sank yields
The 2-year Treasury fell more than 10bp to 4.791%. A Treasury buyback drew $46.4B in demand for $6B purchased, and French fiscal instability added safe-haven buying.
02 · ENERGYThird carrier-group report sent crude past $92
WTI closed at $92.91. China halted fuel exports; the U.S. asked France and Germany to release diesel reserves, with EU emergency talks reported for Friday.
03 · STOCKSAccenture’s AI-driven beat stole the spotlight
ACN surged about 16% after record $22.2B quarterly bookings and a stronger-than-expected FY2027 revenue outlook. Micron rose 3% as its CEO said long-term supply contracts jumped from 16 to 26 in two months. Nike reported after the close: EPS beat, revenue miss, weak China.

Comments that more time may be needed before further tightening fueled expectations of an October rate hold.
The Fed appears to have only two or three limited additional rate hikes in mind. The Fed currently does not seem to judge demand as excessively strong.
The bond market seems to be showing fatigue.
