Inflation Cooled. Yields Hit 5.3% Anyway.

Wall Street faded a morning rally as August PCE came in cooler than expected, but Treasury yields climbed to multi-decade highs on hot GDP revisions — and a mixed bag of earnings kept stock-pickers busy.

The close in one lineCool inflation lost the argument to hot growth, and the bond market priced it in.

The inflation report Wall Street wanted — and ignored

The S&P 500 slipped 0.25% to 7,651.54, the Dow fell 0.86% to 50,906.05, and the Russell 2000 dropped 0.39%, while the Nasdaq 100 eked out a 0.23% gain. The S&P had been up as much as 0.7% intraday before giving back the entire rally as yields pushed higher into the close.

The inflation data was genuinely good. August core PCE — the Fed’s preferred gauge — printed 3.0%, down from 3.3% and below the 3.3% consensus, while headline PCE eased to 3.4% from 3.7%. Some economists noted a methodology change flattered the reading, but the direction was right.

Growth stole the narrative anyway. Second-quarter GDP was revised up to 2.2% from 1.5%, consumer spending grew at its fastest pace in over a year, ADP private payrolls added 90K — the first hiring acceleration since May — and the Chicago PMI surged to 58.8. The 10-year Treasury rose about 4bp to 5.298%, breaking above 5.3% intraday.

    01 · INFLATION

Core PCE cooled to 3.0%, under the 3.3% forecast

Headline PCE eased to 3.4% from 3.7%. The bond market’s response: yields went up anyway.

    02 · GROWTH

GDP revised to 2.2% with the fastest consumer spending in a year

Strong consumption plus AI-infrastructure investment is lifting long-term real rates — the market is now asking whether the economy can simply live with 5%+ yields.

Micron beat, then warned on margins

Micron topped estimates and guided Q1 revenue above expectations, but flagged margin pressure from expanded bonuses — down about 1% after hours. HPE rose 3.9% on its networking outlook; Moderna fell 5.3% on a Citi downgrade to Sell.

    What the pros are saying

The fight against inflation isn’t over, but today’s numbers are a step in the right direction — though the immediate focus is on Treasury yields.

    Brett Kenwell, eToro

What the market seems focused on is the growth rate. The Atlanta Fed’s third-quarter GDP estimate is quite high, and second-quarter GDP came in stronger than expected — that appears to be lifting long-term real rates.

Rob Haworth, U.S. Bank Asset Management

What the market is watching is whether the economy can keep growing while absorbing today’s high interest rates.
