J.B. Hunt reported third-quarter results after the close on Thursday, with revenue up 20% to $3.68B — beating the $3.56B consensus — and EPS of $1.82 vs $1.81 expected.
– Operating revenue: $3.68B, up 20% YoY
– Diluted EPS: $1.82 vs $1.81 consensus
– Operating income: $247.1M, up just 2%
– Intermodal loads: +8% YoYThis is the freight-recovery quarter the market has been waiting for. Intermodal revenue rose 20% to $1.83B on 8% volume growth, with Eastern network loads up 18%. Integrated Capacity Solutions revenue soared 57% to $434M and swung back to profitability. Truckload revenue per load jumped 29%.
But the profit picture is messier than the top line. Operating income barely budged because costs rose with volumes. Dedicated contract services saw operating income fall 22% on higher driver and insurance costs, and Final Mile operating income plunged 76% on lost business and purchased-transportation expense.
Shares closed up 1.4% at $235.31 but slipped about 2.3% after hours, as Stephens analysts noted EPS missed their $1.85 estimate on interest and tax — even while keeping an overweight rating.
What to watch next: whether intermodal pricing power keeps building — the truck-to-rail pricing gap is the bull case — and whether dedicated margins bottom over the next two to three quarters as analysts expect.

Freight is cyclical — is this quarter the early innings of a real recovery, or just a volume bounce with no pricing power behind it?
