A Russian drone strike on central Kyiv on Friday morning killed a 14-year-old boy and injured at least seven other people, marking another deadly escalation in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

    What happened
A Russian drone hit a 16-storey residential building in the capital’s central Pechersk district, Kyiv police said, killing the boy and injuring at least seven others. In the Odesa region, regional governor Oleh Kiper said one person was killed and another injured in strikes on a residential area and logistics premises of a postal operator. Russia’s defence ministry said its forces carried out overnight drone strikes on Ukrainian defence industry facilities, logistics centres and vessels used by Ukraine’s armed forces — including a drone assembly and storage site in the Kyiv region, logistics hubs in the Odesa region, and port infrastructure in Reni on the Danube. Moscow said it also struck a cargo ship carrying military and dual-use goods to the port of Odesa, and later on Friday another cargo vessel delivering military supplies to Chornomorsk, plus a logistics centre and an intelligence data centre. Reuters could not independently verify those statements.

    Why it matters
The strike pattern is deliberate: the capital, port infrastructure, the Danube grain corridor and cargo vessels. Moscow is pressing Ukraine’s export and supply routes from multiple directions, and the civilian toll in Kyiv keeps escalation risk elevated. Markets should take note — the Odesa/Reni corridor underpins Black Sea trade flows, and sustained pressure there feeds directly into regional shipping and insurance costs.

    What to watch
Next catalysts include any Ukrainian response strikes on Russian energy and logistics targets — Ukraine forced Russia’s Novoshakhtinsk refinery to halt operations earlier this week — the proposed UAE-hosted US-Ukraine-Russia trilateral meeting, and whether port-insurance markets reprice Danube and Black Sea transits.
