    Economic Data

September CPI (released Oct 14): Headline inflation rose to 3.7% y/y vs. 3.6% expected and 3.4% prior. Core CPI came in at 2.6% y/y vs. 2.5% expected.

The overshoot was driven by the monthly core reading of 0.3% m/m vs. 0.2% expected — the number that did the real damage to rate-cut hopes.

Also on the tape: the Fed’s Beige Book flagged diesel costs repeatedly, Richmond Fed President Barkin spoke, and President Trump held an Arizona rally.

    Market Sentiment

Risk-off, decisively. The S&P 500’s 1.11% drop was its worst day since July, and the Nasdaq 100’s 2.02% slide was its worst in months.

Money rotated hard into safety: healthcare and consumer staples were the only green sectors, with UnitedHealth +4.73% and Eli Lilly +3.62% leading. The 10-year yield’s drop to 5.09% — a three-week low — shows the haven trade is back.

    Top Stories

Anthropic posted $16.8B in Q3 revenue — and turned an adjusted quarterly profit. Bloomberg reports the AI lab told investors in San Francisco that free cash flow also turned positive, with an 85% adjusted gross margin, 900% net revenue retention, and compute costs down 40%. The company plans to formally announce its IPO on November 9.

TSMC earned a record for the sixth straight quarter — then warned on 2027. Q3 net profit jumped 69% to NT$763.1B on AI chip demand. But management struck a “prudent” tone for 2027, citing component costs and macro uncertainty. It still raised its AI revenue outlook from 40% to 44% and guided Q4 revenue of NT$523–543B.

Barclays says a Tesla–SpaceX merger could be announced before December. The bank sees the deal landing ahead of Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting (expected by Dec 6). The market is increasingly treating a combination as a matter of when, not if.

SK Hynix is conditioning its new U.S. NAND plant on China equipment approvals. Reuters reports the chipmaker wants Washington to approve more U.S. chip equipment exports to its Dalian, China fab as a condition for building in America.

ByteDance is nearing an AI chip deal with MediaTek. Bloomberg reports final-stage talks for custom data-center ASICs, as ByteDance weighs up to $70B in 2026 capex. Separately, eight U.S. states sued OpenAI over ChatGPT safety concerns involving children.

Gartner warns $3.5T of AI investment is at write-down risk. If AI revenue doesn’t justify the buildout, over $3.5 trillion could face impairment by 2030. Operators would need $8.5 trillion in cumulative revenue at a 12% return on invested capital to justify current spending.

    Crypto Desk

Bitcoin ~$80,550 (-2.7%) · Ethereum ~$2,350 (-5.2%). Hot CPI crushed risk appetite across the board, and crypto was no exception.

U.S. spot ETFs saw net outflows: -$261M for Bitcoin and -$129M for Ethereum. The White House said additional BTC reserve accumulation is on hold while it builds custody and management infrastructure. The SEC approved Coinbase volume- and BTC hashrate-linked options.
