Meanwhile, SpaceX is buying its way into the wireless business, Lumentum says AI optical parts are sold out through 2029, and money keeps piling into cash at a record pace.

    Market Sentiment

Investors are running for cover. Money-market funds drew roughly $154 billion globally in the week ended Oct. 7 — the biggest weekly intake since May (LSEG Lipper). BofA notes the dash for cash is now the biggest since April 2020 by its own measure.

The VIX sits near 15.6. Concentration keeps rising: 84% of S&P 500 stocks are at least 10% below their own highs, per Bloomberg — a record narrow market under a record index.

    Top Stories

OpenAI targets $70B run rate by year-end (Bloomberg). The AI lab expects to reach or exceed $70 billion in annualized revenue by December, driven by enterprise growth — directly countering Thursday’s FT report that pegged the run rate at $50B. The $20B gap reportedly reflects different accounting for cloud-pass-through revenue. OpenAI also seeks $30B+ at a $1.4T valuation. AI stocks are rebounding in premarket trading.

SpaceX moves to become a wireless carrier (WSJ). SpaceX agreed to buy up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz low-band spectrum from Grain Management for about $8 billion in cash, pending FCC approval. Musk called it “the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle.” AT&T (-7.9%), Verizon (-7.2%), and T-Mobile (-7.5%) tumbled after hours. SpaceX shares (SPCX) rose 3%. Tower operators Crown Castle (+9%) and American Tower (+7%) surged.

Lumentum “sold out” through early 2029 (Bloomberg). CEO Michael Hurlston said AI optical components are completely sold out, with a 30% supply shortfall on some products through 2028. Six months ago the company thought 2028 had two quarters of capacity left. LITE, COHR, AAOI, and POET all rose overnight. Nvidia invested $2B each in Lumentum and Coherent this year.

Apple cuts iPhone 18 Pro orders (Nikkei). Apple asked suppliers to reduce component production for the recently launched iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on soft demand, Nikkei reports. The stock held up (+1.1%) Thursday as the broader market sold tech.

Humana surges on Medicare ratings. HUM soared 15–17% after the government released Medicare Advantage star ratings, with Humana’s plans improving — unlocking higher bonus payments for 2028.

Amex fined $350M for AML lapses. The OCC and Fed penalized American Express for failing to catch roughly $13 billion in suspicious trade-based transactions over a decade.

Meta bans TikTok ads. Meta blocked ByteDance and TikTok-linked ads across its apps in seven countries, escalating the feud.

SoftBank seeks up to $100B from Gulf investors (FT). Masayoshi Son is courting Middle East backers to expand AI bets, with OpenAI commitments already straining the balance sheet.

Pimco’s Ivascyn warns 10Y could hit 6% (FT). The CIO sees oil, inflation, and debt fears pushing the 10-year to its first 6% since 2000. He noted 10Y at 5.5%+ would strain equities and housing — the 30-year mortgage rate already sits at 7.4%.

Goldman: “worry suggests it isn’t a bubble.” Strategist Christian Mueller-Glissmann told Bloomberg TV that market anxiety about AI capex is itself evidence the rally isn’t a bubble — though he warned Q3 earnings must validate AI monetization.

Trump admin freezes green cards for IT firms. The administration halted PERM labor certifications for Microsoft, Adobe, and other IT companies, and opened probes into nine universities including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford.

China stocks rebound on support speculation. Mainland indexes reversed intraday losses on rumors regulators told funds and insurers to limit selling.

Houthi attacks worsen. Three Saudis were killed at Riyadh’s King Khalid airport, bringing this week’s death toll to four.

    Crypto Desk

Risk-off hit crypto too. U.S. spot ETFs saw $244 million in BTC outflows and $72.5 million in ETH outflows on Oct. 8. Bitcoin bounced to ~$83,200 this morning after tagging $81,600 overnight. Macro headwinds: the 10-year at 24-year highs, Brent above $100, and hawkish Fed minutes ahead of Tuesday’s CPI.
